Seeing people with the worth God created within them can change your entire outlook on life. It makes missions more valuable to you, because you care whether those in another city, state, or country hear about Jesus. It makes prison ministry seem more important than ever, because no matter what they've done, you know God still values them as equal in worth compared to you.
Read MoreWe all naturally want to do work that is meaningful. I heard this quoted many times as a teen and young adult by my father who believes strongly in usng one’s talents and creativity to the fullest. I took this to heart and for many years believed that the gold-standard of achievement lay in scoring a full time paid job doing exactly what you love so that you could love what you do.
Read MoreI wrote in a previous article about acknowledging that there is a living and active God in our lives and learning to live with Him in our lives. But, practically, how do we go about living with God? Especially, if we are in seasons where it is easier to accept He’s not actually around. How do we live with a living God, when we still aren’t convinced He is living?
Read MoreBeing alone means different things. It can be a solo hike through the woods while you listen to the whisper of trees, commune with the birds, and savor solitude that can’t be found inside walls. It can be a cross-country drive that’s filled with audiobooks, podcasts, and music you refuse to listen to in the company of others. The journey is space for you to settle into who you are before arriving at the destination.
Read MoreA secret I kept from my family and friends for many years, long before it even mattered, was my desire to be a mother one day. When I was in my early twenties and I was asked the question, “Do you want kids one day?” I would honestly say no.
Read MoreThere’s a line in the famous hymn, ‘Come Thou Font’ that we sing, and for the longest time it made absolutely no sense to me: “Here I raise my ebenezer, hither by thy help I come.”
Read MoreGrowing your capacity just takes time. It might mean starting new habits or investing in more education. It’s not an overnight process.
Read MoreIn times of isolation, quietness, and solitude, the noise of this world becomes amplified and the lies of the enemy can become overpowering leading to anxious thoughts, thoughts doubting God’s goodness, and hesitation to fully embrace the identity of who God says we are.
Read MoreEarlier this year, around the end of February, my dear friend, Adrian, told me she had been listening to a new podcast called “Fight Hustle, End Hurry.” As we talked about our jobs and our upcoming girls trip at the end of March, she encouraged me to listen to this podcast when I had the chance.
Read MoreI woke up in the middle of the night to an alarm on my phone and the wail of sirens. My roommates and I moved aside suitcases so we could stuff ourselves (and our dogs) into the hall closet. Within five minutes, the storm hit.
Read MoreHave you ever studied the history of marriage? Many people know the story of Adam and Eve. How God said “It is not good for man to be alone”. Then, He created Eve. This tends to be the start of the Christian concept of marriage.
Read MoreTotal student loan debt in the U.S. comes in at about $1.56 trillion for 44.7 million borrowers. According to the U.S. Department of Education, women make up 56 percent of the college students in the U.S.. Fifty years ago, 58 percent of U.S. college students were men. Why am I sharing these statistics here?
Read MoreIt’s ironic how the words of Invictus match the attitude of a former control freak. I was never in control of my life. I’d like to sit here and tell you I knew what I was doing from day one; but that’s just not true. I’d be lying. Married by twenty five! That’s funny. College graduate!
Read MoreTwo weeks ago, when I opened the YouVersion Bible App on my phone, I noticed there was a new update that included a prayer option. Since reading A Praying Life by Paul E. Miller with my community group, the Lord has been showing me more about prayer and I figured I’d implement some of what I have learned while using this new feature.
Read MoreI remember going on a date to a really fancy restaurant--you know the kind with chandeliers, grand pianos, and place settings that make you forget all your table manners. I felt so uncomfortable, insecure and almost guilty for making this beautiful restaurant seem dirty or somewhat tainted with my presence.
Read MoreI recently had to ask myself a question that I don’t think is asked enough, especially with Christian working women. And even more with women who are bosses. What does it mean to be a follower of God and a boss? What should it look like? How are we showing God’s love? Are we leading by example or just getting the job done?
Read MoreFor those of you who haven’t been following along, this is Part 5 in a series about my journey to starting a home for teenage mothers. In Parts 1, 2, and 3 I discussed my family’s history and how it played a part in my journey. Part 4 was the introduction to how I journeyed through my first year of starting a non-profit. That’s the part where things get tricky.
Read MoreI did a crazy thing today. It’s not the first time and it probably won’t be the last. But most people would probably call this one of the craziest. I signed on for a new (more expensive) apartment. Not a big deal, right?
Read MoreI always start hikes with a great level of enthusiasm. My pace is quick (probably too quick) and my ponytail bounces, even on the steepest of hills. Because I typically hike alone, I use an app to track my progress. It ensures that I stay on the trail and provides a resource in case the trail blazes disappear (which they occasionally do...especially in snowy conditions).
Read MoreI don't know about you, but during this time of lockdown, I have actually found it harder to be consistent with my quiet time rather than easier. It should seem the opposite, shouldn't it? Now that many of our social plans, outings, and even regular work hours are disrupted, shouldn't it be easier than ever before to come before the Lord? To carve out that time?
